26in x 24in matted and framed:$3,000USD : \These are the images I saw in my first years working in an institution for people with mental retardation. When you walked down the long hallways with terrazzo floors and tile walls, you would see steel doors that were entrances into "living units". In each door was a glass window with chicken wire to reinforce the glass. There would always be a face of a person with a flat affect (no expression) staring out. Almost like a sentinel. The images haunted me for years. The first picture I did is in a museum which chronicals the history of the facilitiy. A few years ago, I was asked to restore this picture which was damaged by the sun and lack of attention. While doing the restoration work, I decided to do another picture for myself. As I was working in the shadows on the right hand side, faces began to appear (which were not in the first piece). The other ghost figures just appeared and sat down...It is important that we never forget what we did to vulnerable people in the name of public safety and proper use of public dollars. |
